미국 공화당 대선후보인 존 맥케인 상원의원이 자신은 이라크와 아프가니스탄 주둔 미군을 늘릴 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 맥케인 후보는 자신은 전쟁에서 이기는 방법을 알고 있다면서 이같이 말했습니다.
맥케인 후보는 15일 뉴멕시코 주 알버커키에서 열린 집회에서 이라크에서 미군 증원은 성공적이었고, 아프가니스탄에서도 효과를 거둘 것이라고 예측했습니다.
한편 민주당 대선후보인 바락 오바마 상원의원은 같은날 워싱턴에서 행한 연설에서, 이라크 전은 미국이 처한 여러가지 위협에 대한 주위를 흩뜨린다고 말했습니다.
오바마 후보는 자신의 최우선 과제는 알카에다 및 아프가니스탄의 탈레반과 싸우는 것이라면서, 이라크 주둔 미군을 감축하겠다는 입장을 거듭 밝혔습니다.
오바마 후보는 이달 말 이라크와 아프가니스탄을 방문할 계획입니다.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain says he knows how to win wars and would apply the strategy of increasing troop levels in Iraq to Afghanistan.
He said the troop "surge" has been a success and the same strategy would work in Afghanistan. He spoke in a town hall meeting today (Tuesday) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
In a speech today in Washington, Obama said the the war in Iraq distracts the U.S. from every other threat it faces. He said his top priority would be fighting al-Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan and repeated his pledge to reduce troop levels in Iraq toward that end.
Obama's speech comes ahead of his visit later this month to Iraq and Afghanistan.
