Officials say militants have ambushed a military convoy in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least seven soldiers and wounding several others.
The paramilitary convoy was heading towards the town of Hangu in North West Frontier Province today (Saturday) when it was attacked by militants.
Pakistani security officials say at least three suspected Taliban militants were killed when troops returned fire.
Today's incident is the latest violence in the tribal region bordering Afghanistan. Militants in Hangu district are currently holding several Pakistani soldiers hostage, and had threatened to kill them if the government did not release seven of their comrades by today (Saturday).
In other news, NATO officials in Afghanistan say militants are responsible for Thursday's mortar attacks that wounded at least seven Pakistani soldiers and two civilians along the Afghan-Pakistani border.
In a statement released today (Saturday), NATO said insurgents fired at targets in both Pakistan and Afghanistan in an apparent attempt to create a border incident.
