오바마 진영은 28일 오바마가 중동의 요르단과 이스라엘에 이어 독일, 프랑스, 영국 등을 잇따라 방문할 계획이라고 밝혔습니다. 그러나 오바마측은 안전상의 이유로 이라크와 아프가니스탄 방문 여부와 정확한 순방 날짜는 밝히지 않았습니다.
오바마의 외교정책 보좌관인 데니스 맥도너는 오바마가 중동 과 유럽에서 각국 지도자들을 만나 테러리즘, 핵확산, 기후변화, 이라크 사태 등 공동 현안들에 대해 논의할 것이라고 말했습니다. 미국의 대통령 후보가 선거일을 불과 수 개월 남겨놓고 해외 순방에 나서는 것은 이례적인 일입니다.
관측통들은 오바마는 외교 안보정책에 취약하다는 일각의 비판을 의식해 해외 순방을 결정한 것으로 보고있습니다. 오바마는 이제까지 2006년 1월 이라크를 방문했으나 공화당 후보인 존 매케인은 지난 3월까지 모두 8차례나 이라크를 찾아 국가안보에 대한 경험과 관심이 오바마보다 앞선다는 점을 강조해왔습니다.

candidate Barack Obama today (Saturday) announced plans to visit the
Middle East and Europe this summer.
The Obama campaign announced he will visit Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and
the United Kingdom. The campaign did not confirm if Obama also planned to visit
Iraq and Afghanistan. The campaign also declined to offer specific travel
dates.
In a statement released today (Saturday), Senator Obama said the trip
will give him an opportunity to assess the situations in countries critical to
U.S. national security and consult with friends and allies about common
challenges.
Obama faces presumed Republican presidential nominee, Senator John McCain, who
has criticized Senator Obama's foreign policy views and experience.
McCain criticized Obama for saying he would agree to meet with Iran's
president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, without imposing preconditions.
McCain's campaign said Obama's plan showed "incredibly weak
judgment".
