호시야르 제바리 이라크 외무장관은 18일 워싱턴에서 기자들에게 이같이 밝혔습니다. 이라크는 미국과의 어떤 안보 조약도 이라크 주권을 침해하지 않아야 한다고 주장해 왔습니다.
이라크 정부 성명서에 따르면, 제바리 장관은 딕 체니 미 부통령과 17일 안보 협약에 대해 논의했습니다. 성명서는 또 양측이 7월말까지 협약을 체결해야 한다는 점에 합의했다고 밝혔습니다.
미국과 이라크 당국자들은 미군에 대한 유엔의 위임이 만료되는 올해 12월 31일 이후에도 미군의 이라크 주둔을 계속 허용하는 방안에 대해 협의하고 있습니다.
*****Iraq's foreign minister says negotiations with the United States on a long-term security agreement have progressed because of what he called greater U.S. "flexibility" on the terms.
Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told reporters in Washington today (Wednesday) that talks on the planned agreement have improved. Iraq has insisted that any security deal with the U.S. should not violate Iraqi sovereignty.
An Iraqi government statement says Zebari discussed terms of the agreement with U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney in Washington Tuesday. The statement says the two agreed on the importance of finalizing a deal before the end of July.
U.S. and Iraqi officials have been negotiating an agreement to allow American forces to remain in Iraq beyond December 31st, when their United Nations mandate expires.
