International investigators say they found plans for a
relatively compact nuclear weapon on computers around the world that belonged
to the nuclear smuggling network run by disgraced Pakistani scientist Abdul
Qadeer Khan.
The investigators say it is not clear if those plans were sold to the smuggling
ring's customers, which included Iran, North Korea and Libya.
They say the plans resemble a nuclear weapon built and tested by Pakistan 10
years ago. Such a weapon could be small and light enough to be carried by
ballistic missiles like those owned by Iran and North Korea. The information
also could cut the time needed to develop a practical weapon.
Pakistan's government has refused to allow investigators to question Khan, who
is under house arrest, because he is regarded as a national hero for developing
the country's nuclear program.
