Afghan troops have seized and destroyed almost 237 tons of hashish -- worth an estimated 400 million dollars -- in what may be the world's largest drug bust.
The commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, U.S. General David McKiernan, says Taliban insurgents stood to pocket about 14 million dollars from the sale of the drugs. He said the seizure will cripple their ability to buy weapons.
Afghan and NATO officials say the hashish -- which weighed as much as 30 of London's double-decker buses -- had been buried in trenches in the Spin Boldak region of Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan.
