A group of negotiators from Taiwan has arrived in Beijing today (Wednesday) to hold the first formal talks between the two sides since 1999.
Taiwan's top negotiator, Chiang Pin-kung, is leading the 19-member delegation, which includes some senior Taiwanese government officials who are the highest ranking officials to take part in such bilateral talks.
During the three-day visit, the two sides are scheduled to sign an agreement to allow more Chinese tourists to visit Taiwan and begin regular Saturday and Sunday charter flights.
Chiang heads a semi-official body (Straits Exchange Foundation) that was set-up to talk with China in the absence of official ties. He and his Chinese counterpart Chen Yunlin are expected to sign an agreement on Friday finalizing the new agreement.
