China has fired fifteen government officials in quake-hit Sichuan province for malpractice related to earthquake relief efforts.
State media reported today (Monday) the officials were blamed for illegal behavior and a late response to the seven-point-nine magnitude earthquake that struck May 12th. Thirteen other employees were punished for wrongdoing involving quake relief.
A government official who declined to be named said the malpractice caused a "very bad influence" among members of the public. He did not elaborate.
Also today, a five-point-zero magnitude aftershock struck a swollen lake in China that was formed by last month's massive earthquake and is threatening to flood thousands of homes downstream.
Local officials say the aftershocks have not had any impact on the lake, but the official Xinhua news agency says the situation remains "highly dangerous."
