Five of the world's leading energy consuming countries have expressed serious concern about the rising price of oil.

Energy ministers from the United States, China, India, Japan and South Korea met Saturday in Aomori, Japan, where they called for increased production of crude oil and pledged to work on conservation and the development of alternative energy sources. Those five countries consume about half of the world's oil.

They are concerned that spiraling energy costs could harm their economies. The price of oil has more than doubled during the past year. On Friday, crude oil climbed to an all-time high of more than 139 dollars per barrel.

The United States, China, India, Japan and South Korea agreed in principle to gradually end subsidies on fuel prices. But China and India said they would not take immediate action to eliminate the subsidies, which keep consumer oil prices low.
