백악관은 이날 성명을 발표하고, 버마 정부가 모든 정치범을 석방하는 한편 아웅 산 수지 여사와 소속당을 포함한 민주주의 및 소수계 그룹과 대화를 시작할 것을 촉구했습니다.
미국 국무부도 가택연금 연장은 버마의 정치적 자유와 관련해 매우 슬픈 소식이라면서, 하지만 이로 인해 버마 태풍 피해자에 지원에 대한 영향은 없을 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
버마 군사정부 지도자들은 27일 아웅 산 수 지 여사의 집을 방문하고, 가택연금 연장을 통보했습니다.
하지만 연장 기간에 대해서는 6개월과 1년이라는 서로 다른 보도가 나오고 있습니다. 이번 연장 조치는 기존 가택연금의 만료를 불과 몇 시간 앞두고 이뤄졌습니다.

President Bush says he is deeply troubled by Burma's decision to renew the house arrest order for democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been detained since 2003.
The White House today (Tuesday) called on Burma to release all political prisoners and begin a dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi and her political party, the National League for Democracy -- as well as other democratic and ethnic minority groups.
The U.S. State Department called the extension of house arrest a sad statement about political freedom in Burma, but promised the development will not affect U.S. aid for cyclone victims in Burma.
Burma's military leaders notified Aung San Suu Kyi of her new term of detention in a visit to the Nobel laureate's home today (Tuesday).
There are conflicting reports whether the term is for six months or a year. The detention was renewed just hours before Aung San Suu Kyi's previous house arrest order was due to expire.
