조지 부시 미국 대통령은 21일 ‘쿠바인들과의 단결의 날’ 첫해를 맞이해 쿠바내 자유와 정치범들의 석방을 촉구했습니다.
부시 대통령은 이날 백악관에서 쿠바 경제는 피델 카스트로 전 국가평의회 의장의 정권아래 취약해졌으며 쿠바 사회는 수십년간 방치되면서 현재 무너지고 있다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 최근 쿠바내 변화를 언급하면서, 미국인들이 곧 쿠바에 거주하는 가족들에게 휴대폰을 보낼 수 있게 될 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
부시 대통령은 쿠바인들이 새 라울 카스트로 정권 아래 휴대폰을 구입할 수 있다면 공공장소에서도 자유롭게 통화할 수 있어야 한다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 또 ‘쿠바인들과의 단결의 날’을 기념하기 위해 지난 1972년 쿠바 수용소에서 숨진 시인 겸 반체제 인사 루이스 보이텔을 포함한 일부 쿠바 정치범들을 언급했습니다.

President George Bush has marked the first annual "Day of Solidarity with the Cuban People" by calling for freedom in Cuba and the release of all political prisoners.
Speaking at the White House today (Wednesday), Mr. Bush said Cuba's economy has been reduced to shambles under the regime of Fidel Castro and that the society is crumbling after decades of neglect.
Addressing recent changes in Cuba, Mr. Bush announced that Americans will soon be allowed to send cell phones to Cubans. He said that if Cubans are allowed to purchase cell phones under the new government of Raul Castro, they should also be able to speak freely in public.
The president mentioned several Cuban political prisoners to honor them on this day, including Pedro Luis Boitel, a poet and dissident who died in a Cuban jail in 1972.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, who is a Cuban-American, helped conceive the idea of the Cuba solidarity day.
