이라크 군 당국은 20일 오전 사드르 시의 안정과 치안을 유지하기 위해 이른바 평화작전을 전개했다고 밝혔습니다.
군대변인은 수백명정부군 병력이 도시 여러지역에 배치되었지만 지금까지 한건의 폭력사건도 접수되지 않았다고 말했습니다.
사드르 시는 과격 시아파 지도자 모크타다 알 사드르의 본거지로, 그동안 미군의 지원을 받은 이라크정부군의 군사작전은 격렬한 시가전을 촉발하곤 했습니다. 그러나 주민들은 이라크 정부군이 오늘 사드르 시에 진입했을 때 공격을 받지 않았다고 전했습니다.
이라크 정부와 알 사드르 측은 이달초 휴전에 합의했으나, 그 후에도 시아파 무장대원들과 이라크 정부군간의 무력충돌은 그치지않았습니다.

Iraqi forces have moved into Baghdad's Sadr City neighborhood in an operation aimed at bringing government control over the Shi'ite militia stronghold.
Iraq security officials say they launched "Operation Peace" early today (Tuesday) to try to stabilize and secure the area.
A military spokesman says hundreds of troops have deployed in different sectors of the city. He says no violence has been reported so far.
The operation is in line with a truce reached earlier this month between Iraq's government and Shi'ite militiamen loyal to radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.
Despite the truce, there have been sporadic clashes between Shi'ite militia and U.S.-backed security forces in the area.
Fighting in Sadr City has killed hundreds of people since late March, when Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki ordered a crackdown on Shi'ite militias.
