West African ministers are holding emergency talks to discuss ways of dealing with the region's food crisis.
Nigeria's Finance Minister Shamsudeen Usman said today (Monday) the region's governments must prepare an "emergency solution" to provide food for their populations.
Usman said West Africa must also develop medium- and long-term solutions to its food shortages.
High prices for staples like rice have fuelled riots and protests in several West African countries this year, including Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Senegal.
Nigeria is hosting the one-day meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in its capital, Abuja.
ECOWAS experts say it will take more than 11 billion dollars to alleviate the food shortages in the region.
