이라크 주둔 미군 사령관인 제프리 하몬드 소장은 최근 미군 병사 한 명이 회교 성전인 코란을 표적으로 삼아 사격 연습을 한데 대해 정식으로 사과했습니다.
하몬드 소장은 17일 많은 이라크인들 앞에서 자신은 이라크인들을 보호하기 위해 이라크에 왔다며, 용서를 바란다고 말했습니다.
하몬드 소장은 이라크 수도 바그다드 교외의 라드와니야를 방문한 자리에서 사과를 표명했습니다.
지난 5월 11일 바로 이 곳 라드와니야에서 총탄으로 너덜해진 코란이 발견돼 파문이 일어났습니다.
미군은 코란을 표적으로 사격 연습을 한 문제의 미군 병사가 이라크에서 떠났으며, 징계 처분을 받게 될 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

A U.S. military commander in Iraq has personally apologized for an incident in which a U.S. soldier used the Islamic holy book, the Koran, for target practice.
Major General Jeffrey Hammond asked a large group of Iraqis for forgiveness Saturday and said he had come to their country to protect them. Another military official presented a new Koran to local leaders.
Hammond made the apology in Radhwaniya, on the outskirts of Baghdad, where Iraqis found a copy of the Koran riddled with bullets at a shooting range on May 11th.
The U.S. military says the soldier involved in the desecration has been removed from Iraq and is facing disciplinary action.
