The U.S. House of Representatives has voted against a bill to provide one more year of funding for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Analysts described Thursday's (149-141) vote as largely symbolic, since the Senate is expected to revive the spending measure soon. But the vote was a rare sign of cooperation between anti-war Democrats and Republicans, who united to defeat the bill. Republicans opposed domestic spending measures attached to the legislation.
The Democratic leadership of the House had pushed strongly for the 163 billion dollar legislation, which provides funds for veterans' education and for unemployment benefits as well as defense spending.
After defeating the bill, the House voted (227 to 196) to approve a non-binding resolution calling for the U.S. to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq within 30 days.
