The Iraqi government is offering militants in the northern city of Mosul cash and amnesty if they turn in their weapons.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki made the offer from Mosul, considered to be the last major urban stronghold of al-Qaida in Iraq. Mr. Maliki is personally overseeing a crackdown on insurgents in the region.

He says starting today (Friday), gunmen have 10 days to hand over medium and heavy weaponry.

The crackdown, now in its third day, has resulted in the arrests of more than 500 suspected militants.

Meanwhile, Iranian state media are blaming the U.S. for an attack on Iranian embassy staff in Baghdad.

Gunmen shot at an embassy car Thursday, wounding three Iranians and their Iraqi driver.

The U.S. military denied any involvement in the shooting.
