중국 남서부 쓰촨 성에서 12일 발생한 강력한 지진으로 8천 7백명 가량이 사망했다고 중국 당국이 밝혔습니다.
중국의 관영 신화통신은 쓰촨 성 베이촨 현 한 곳에서만 적어도 3천에서 5천 명이 숨졌다고 보고했습니다.
지역 당국자들은 베이촨 현에서 80%의 건물들이 무너졌으며 적어도 1만 명이 부상한 것으로 우려된다고 말했습니다.베이촨 현은 쓰촨성 성도인 청두에서 160km 북쪽에 위치해 있습니다.
이번 지진의 진원지인 원촨현에서의 상황은 즉각 알려지지 않았습니다. 원촨현에서는 십만명이 거주하고 있습니다. 신화통신은 원촨현에 이르는 도로들이 파괴됐으며, 폭풍으로 인해 군용기들이 이 지역에 접근하지 못하고 있다고 보도했습니다.
신화통신은 원촨현에서 최소 30명이 사망했다고 보도했으나 정보 입수 경로를 공개하지 않았습니다.
한편, 쓰촨성 두장옌시에서 고등학교 건물이 붕괴돼 학생 900명이 매몰됐다는 보도가 있으며, 신화 통신은 이곳에서 50구의 시신이 발견됐다고 전했습니다.
또 이번 지진으로 쓰촨성에서 화학 공장 두 곳이 피해를 입어 수백 명이 매몰됐으며 수천 명이 긴급 대피했습니다. 인근 산시성에서도 최소 61명이 사망한 것으로 보도됐습니다.
미국 지질연구소에 따르면 12일 오후 중국 남부 쓰촨성 청두시로부터 92킬로미터 떨어진 곳에서 진도 7.8의 강진이 발생했습니다.

Chinese authorities say a powerful earthquake has killed nearly eight-thousand-700 people in the southwestern province of Sichuan.
The official Xinhua news agency says three thousand to five thousand people have died in one Sichuan county Beichuan alone. Local officials say at least 80 percent of the buildings there have collapsed, and 10-thousand more people are feared injured.
That county is about 160 kilometers north of Sichuan's capital of Chengdu.
There has been little word from the epicenter of the quake, Wenchuan county, home to more than 100-thousand people. Xinhua says roads leading to the county have been destroyed, and storms have prevented military rescue helicopters from reaching the site.
Xinhua says at least 30 people are dead, but they did not say where the information came from.
Elsewhere in Sichuan, reports say nearly 900 students were buried when a high school collapsed in a township (Dujiangyan) near the epicenter. Xinhua says at least 50 bodies have been recovered from the rubble.
Two chemical plants in Sichuan also have been damaged, burying hundreds of people and forcing the evacuation of several thousand others.
At least 61 deaths have also been reported in Sichuan's neighboring province of Shaanxi.
