Two United Nations planes carrying aid for cyclone victims in Burma have arrived in the country, where hundreds of thousands are waiting desperately for food, water and medicine.

Two other planes are expected to follow. Most of the members of a five-man U.N. disaster team have also been cleared to enter the country today (Thursday).

Getting aid into military-ruled Burma following Cyclone Nargis has been extremely difficult. The Burmese government has been slow to clear planes to land in the tightly-controlled country and issue visas to aid workers.

Earlier today, it appeared that Burma had granted approval for the United States to fly U.S. military C-130s loaded with relief goods into the country, but that situation changed. U.S. ambassador to Thailand, Eric John, says he does not know whether the decision was rescinded or if there was a miscommunication.

So far, the official death toll from the storm is more than 22-thousand people, with 42-thousand people listed as missing. The top U.S. diplomat in Burma (Charges d'Affaires Shari Villarosa) warned Wednesday that the death toll from Nargis may reach 100-thousand.
