China's Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a landmark concert for Pope Benedict at the Vatican today (Wednesday), aimed at warming ties between Beijing and the Holy See.
The orchestra's conductor, Yu Long, will lead one of China's finest ensembles, accompanied by the Shanghai Opera Chorus. The concert, to be performed at the Vatican's main auditorium, will include Mozart's Requiem and the well-known Chinese folk song, Jasmine Flower.
Both sides are hailing the event as a vehicle for dialogue.
Communist China cut ties with the Vatican in 1951. Beijing appoints bishops for its state-sanctioned Catholic Church, which are not approved by the pope. But millions of Chinese Catholics worship in underground congregations, loyal to the Vatican.
Pope Benedict has made improving ties with China one of his priorities.
