미국의 콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관은 이란이 팔레스타인 과격 무장세력 하마스를 대리군으로 이용해 중동지역의 안정을 교란시키고 있다고 비난했습니다.
라이스 장관은 어제 워싱턴에서 미국 유태계 지도자들과 만난 자리에서 하마스 무장대원들이 이스라엘을 파괴하려는 이란 정부의 대리 전사 노릇을 하고 있다며 이같이 말했습니다.
라이스 장관은 미국 정부가 테러와 무기 확산에 연루된 것으로 알려진 이란에 대해 추가 경제 제재를 계획하고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.
한편 로버트 게이츠 미국 국방장관은 페르시아만에 배치된 두 척의 미 항공모함은 이란에 대한 군사공격을 준비하기 위한 것이 아니며, 다만 이란에 대해 미국의 군사력을 상기시키는 역할을 하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says Iran is using the Palestinian militant group Hamas as a "proxy" army to destabilize the Middle East.
She told a gathering of American Jewish leaders in Washington Tuesday that Hamas militants are serving as "proxy warriors" for an Iranian government bent on destroying Israel.
Iran is a vocal supporter of Hamas but denies arming or training the group, which controls the Gaza Strip. Secretary Rice also said Washington is planning additional economic sanctions on Iran for its alleged involvement in terrorism and weapons proliferation.
In another development, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said (in Mexico City) that the deployment of a second U.S. aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf is a "reminder" to Iran of U.S. military power. But, he says the temporary move is not a precursor to a military strike on Iran.
