캄보디아의 크메르 루즈 전 공산정권에서 양민 학살의 주범으로 꼽히는 고위인사가 유엔 전범 재판에 출두했으나, 변호인이 법정을 박차고 나가 재판이 중단됐습니다.
올해 76살의 키우 삼판 전 크메르 루즈 국가원수의 변호를 맡은 프랑스 출신의 자크 베르쥬는 키우 삼판의 구속 적부심 심리에서 재판 관련 문건이 프랑스어로 번역되지 않아 키우 삼판의 혐의 내용을 파악할 수 없다며 재판정을 떠났습니다.
이에 대해 재판부는 구속 적부심 심리를 중단하고 베르쥬 변호사에게 경고장을 발부했습니다.
키우 삼판은 지난해 11월 체포돼 전쟁범죄와 인륜을 거역한 범죄 혐의로 기소됐습니다.
지난 1975년부터 79년 사이 크메르 루즈 공산정권 치하에서 처형되거나 질병, 강제노동, 굶주림 등으로 사망한 캄보디아인은 약 2백만 명에 이릅니다.

Cambodia's United Nations-sponsored genocide tribunal has halted a hearing of a former senior leader of the Khmer Rouge after his French defense lawyer walked out of court.
Jacques Verges, one of the lawyers representing Khieu Samphan, stormed out of a closed-door hearing today (Wednesday) in Phnom Penh, complaining that court documents were not translated into French.
The tribunal halted the hearing and issued Verges a warning for his behavior.
Verges, whose client list has included Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie and Venezuelan terrorist "Carlos the Jackal," complained that he had no way of knowing what his client is being charged with. The tribunal disputes the claim.
Khieu Samphan, the 76-year-old former president of the Khmer Rouge, was arrested last November and charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity.
