조지 부시 미국 대통령은 오는 7월 이후 이라크 주둔 미군의 철수를 무기한 중단할 것을 지시했습니다.
부시 대통령은 10일 백악관에서 이라크 주둔 미군 최고 사령관인 데이비드 페트레이어스 장군의 건의사항들을 지지한다고 말했습니다.
부시대통령은 이라크주둔 미군사령관들에게 현지 안보상황을 점검하는데 필요한 충분한 시간을 제공할 시간을 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
이에 따라 오는 11월 미국의 차기 대통령이 당선된 이후 이라크에는 미국 지상군 14만 명이 남아 있을 것으로 예상됩니다.부시 대통령은 15개월 전 이라크 주둔 미군 증강 이후 이라크내 종파간 폭력사태와 함께 민간인과 미군 병사들의 사망자 수가 줄어드는 등, 이라크 사태의 전망이 밝아졌다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 또 오는 8월 부터 이라크 주둔 미군의 복무기간을 15개월에서 12개월로 단축하기로 결정했습니다.
한편 이라크 주둔 미군은 10일 수도 바그다드의 사드르 시에서 과격 시아파 민병대와 5일째 전투를 벌였습니다. 이라크 관리들은 미군의 공습으로 적어도 6명이 사망하고 10명이 부상했다고 밝혔습니다.
미군 헬기는 9일에 이어 10일에도 바그다드내 표적들을 향해 미사일을 발사했습니다. 지난 9일은 미국의 이라크 점령 5주년을 기리는 날이었습니다. 이날 어린이 3명을 포함해 적어도 22명이 숨졌습니다. 또 9일에도 미군 병사 6명이 숨져 지난 6일 이후 적어도 17명의 미군 병사가 숨졌다고 미군 당국이 밝혔습니다.

President Bush has ordered an indefinite suspension of U.S. troop withdrawals from Iraq after July, in a major speech defending his war policy.
Mr. Bush announced at the White House today (Thursday) that he would give his top commander in Iraq all the time he needs to review the security situation there.
That is expected to leave about 140-thousand troops on the ground in Iraq after a new U.S. president is elected in November.
The president said a surge in U.S. troops 15 months ago has revived the prospect of success in Iraq by reducing sectarian violence and civilian and U.S. military deaths.
In another major decision, Mr. Bush called for shortened tours for U.S. troops sent to Iraq, starting in August. Soldiers would serve 12 months instead of 15 to ease the military strain of extended deployments.
Meanwhile, officials in Iraq say U.S. air strikes in Baghdad's Sadr City district killed at least six people and wounded 10 others, as U.S. forces battled Shi'ite militias for a fifth straight day.
In two separate incidents today (Thursday) and late Wednesday, U.S. military helicopters fired missiles at targets in the Iraqi capital. At least one operation was in response to an attack on U.S. troops.
Wednesday marked the fifth anniversary of the fall of Baghdad to U.S. forces. Earlier in the day, at least 22 people were killed, including at least three children. The U.S. military says six soldiers also were killed Wednesday, raising the toll to at least 17 since Sunday.
Sadr City has been the scene of increased fighting between U.S. forces and militants loyal to radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.
