베이징 올림픽 성화 봉송에 항의하는 시위가 잇따르는 가운데, 국제올림픽위원회의 자크 로게 위원장이 중국 정부에 대해 티베트 사태를 평화적으로 조속히 해결하라고 촉구했습니다.
로게 위원장은 오늘 베이징에서 열린 중국 올림픽위원회 개회 연설에서, 어떠한 이유로든 폭력은 올림픽 경기나 올림픽 성화 봉송의 가치와 양립할 수 없다며 그같이 말했습니다.
로게 위원장은 또 올림픽 참가 거부를 요구하는 목소리가 일부 있는 것은 사실이나 대대적인 올림픽 참가 거부 움직임은 없다고 말했습니다.
로게 위원장은 항의 시위로 인해 베이징 올림픽 성화 봉송에 차질이 빚어질 수 있다며 우려했습니다.
한편 티베트의 정신적 지도자 달라이 라마는 어제 전세계 티베트인들에게 폭력을 자제하고 중국인들의 증오를 불러 일으킬 행동을 하지 말 것을 호소했습니다.
*****The head of the International Olympic Committee has called on China to peacefully and rapidly resolve the situation in Tibet following recent unrest and protests targeting the Olympic torch relay overseas.
Speaking today in Beijing at the opening of a meeting of national Olympics heads, Jacques Rogge said violence, for whatever reason, is not compatible with the values of the torch relay or the Olympic Games.
Rogge said that although there were calls for a boycott of the Olympics, he saw no momentum for a general boycott. He also voiced concern that protesters could disrupt the torch relay.
On Sunday, the Dalai Lama appealed to Tibetans around the world to refrain from violence and any actions that, in his words, "could create hatred in the minds of Chinese people."
