미국의 로버트 게이츠 국방장관은 북대서양 조약기구 나토가 이번 주에 아프가니스탄에서 탈레반 저항세력과 싸울 추가 병력 파병을 약속할 것이라고 말했습니다.
그러나, 게이츠 장관은 증파 병력의 수는 군 지휘관들의 기대에 크게 미치지 못할 것이라고 덧붙였습니다. 게이츠 장관은 1일 덴마크 수도 코펜하겐에서 소렌 가데 덴마크 국방장관과 회담하고 난 후 그같이 말했습니다.
또한 게이츠 장관은 미국과 러시아는 미국의 유럽 미사일 방어계획에 대해 합의에 근접했다고 말했습니다.
인구 510만명의 덴마크는 아프간 남부에 550명의 전투병력을 파병했고, 전체 나토 동맹국 가운데 1인당 사망자 비율이 가장 높은 나라 가운데 하나입니다.
미국은 43,000 여명의 아프간 주둔 나토 주도 연합군의 병력 부족을 보충하기 위해 3,500의 해병대를 추가로 파병할 계획입니다. 프랑스는 현재 1,500명의 파병 병력에 몇 백명을 추가할 준비가 돼 있다고 이번 주에 밝혔습니다. 그루지아 또한 몇 백명을 파병할 것이라고 자원했습니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says NATO is likely this week to commit more troops to battle Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan. But he says the number of reinforcements will fall measurably short of what commanders want.
Gates spoke today in Copenhagen, where he conferred with his Danish counterpart, Soren Gade. He also said Washington and Moscow have moved closer to an agreement on U.S. missile shield plans for Europe.
Denmark, with 5.1 million people, has 550 combat troops in southern Afghanistan, and has one of the highest per capita casualty rates in the entire NATO alliance.
Washington is deploying an additional 3,500 Marines to fill a shortfall in the 43,000-plus NATO-led force in Afghanistan. France this week said it is ready to add several hundred more troops to its 15-hundred-strong contingent. Georgia has also volunteered several hundred troops.
