Reports from Zimbabwe say advisers of President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai are discussing the possibility of Mr. Mugabe giving up power.
However, two top officials of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change told VOA (Zimbabwe Project) today (Tuesday) that no such discussions are taking place.
The Associated Press and "The New York Times" say the talks began after top aides to Mr. Mugabe concluded he had not won enough votes to avoid a runoff in the country's presidential election.
The AP's source for the story was a person said to be close to Zimbabwe's electoral commission. The Times cited a Western diplomatic source and a Zimbabwean political analyst, John Makumbe.
Zimbabwe's electoral commission has yet to release any results from the presidential vote, three days after the election. But a coalition of Zimbabwean civil society groups that monitored the vote says its own tally shows Mr. Tsvangirai leading Mr. Mugabe by about eight percentage points (49-point-four to 41-point-eight percent).
The international community is calling for Zimbabwe's electoral commission to quickly release full results from Saturday's elections.
A U.S. State Department spokesman said today (Tuesday) that questions must be raised about the intent of Zimbabwe's election commission because it has not even released partial results from the vote more than three days ago.
The spokesman (Tom Casey) said the United States currently has no reason to question unofficial projections showing opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai leading President Robert Mugabe.
