Voters across Zimbabwe have begun casting ballots in today's (Saturday's) presidential and parliamentary elections.

President Robert Mugabe, who has ruled the southern African nation since 1980, is seeking a sixth term in office. During a rally in the capital of Harare Friday, Mr. Mugabe accused his rivals of being Western puppets, and urged voters to cast their ballots to reject the influence of former colonial power Britain.

His opponents, Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change, and Simba Makoni, an independent, say Zimbabwe is in need of new leadership. They have promised to repair the economy, which is crippled by chronic food and fuel shortages, and inflation of more than 100-thousand percent.

The president says Western sanctions are to blame for Zimbabwe's economic crisis.

Both opposition candidates say the Mugabe government has falsified voter lists and is using the armed forces to intimidate voter.
