아랍연맹 정상회담이 많은 회원국 국가 수반들의 불참 속에 29일 시리아 수도 다마스커스에서 시작됐습니다.
시리아의 바샤르 알-아싸드 대통령은 알제리와 쿠웨이트, 리비아, 수단, 튀니지 등 22개 아랍연맹 회원국 대표단을 환영했습니다.
미국과 가까운 동맹국인 이집트의 호스니 무바라크 대통령과 요르단의 압둘라 국왕, 레바논의 파우드 시니오라 총리 등을 비롯해, 거의 12개 회원국 국가 수반들은 시리아가 레바논 정치 문제에 간섭하고 있다고 비난하면서, 이번 정상회담에 참석하지 않았습니다. 이들은 대신 각료급 대표단을 파견했습니다.
시니오라 레바논 총리는 시리아가 새 대통령 선출을 방해하고 있다고 말했습니다. 레바논은 에밀레 라후드 전 대통령 임기가 만료된 후 새 국가 수반을 뽑지 못하고 있습니다.
The Arab League summit convened today (Saturday) in the Syrian capital of Damascus, with many heads of state in the region boycotting the event.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad welcomed delegations from the 22 Arab League members, including Algeria, Kuwait, Libya, Sudan and Tunisia.
Nearly a dozen heads of state are not attending the forum, including Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Jordan's King Abdullah and Lebanon's Prime Minister Fuad Siniora - all close allies of the United States. They have accused Syria of interfering in Lebanon's political affairs.
Lower-level representatives of those countries are taking part in the Damascus meeting.
Mr. Siniora says Damascus is obstructing his country's attempts to elect a new president. Lebanon has been without a head of state since November, when former President Emile Lahoud's term expired.
