Russian president-elect Dmitry Medvedev has warned that granting NATO membership to Ukraine and Georgia could threaten European security.

Medvedev made his comments in an interview published today (Tuesday) in the Financial Times.

He told the newspaper that "no state can be pleased" when members of an outside military bloc come close to its borders.

NATO leaders are expected to hold a summit next week to consider membership status for the two former Soviet republics.

Washington supports the bids of Ukraine and Georgia, but some European nations are hesitant to any new status.

U.S. President George W. Bush is scheduled to travel to Ukraine on the eve of the NATO summit.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is also expected to attend part of the summit.
