An uneasy calm hung over Lhasa today (Saturday), as a strong Chinese security presence helped maintain order after at least 10 people were reported killed in Friday's protests.

Sites in the center of the Tibetan capital are blocked to the public and witnesses report few people on the streets.

The situation is in sharp contrast to Friday, when much of the city's downtown was on fire. China's official Xinhua news agency is portraying Friday's riot as the work of "violent saboteurs" and blames rioters for killing at least 10 innocent people.

Residents of Lhasa told VOA (Tibetan Service) that more than 20 Tibetans were killed Friday.

Tibet's exile government, based in India, says it has confirmed 30 deaths and received unconfirmed reports that police killed up to 100 Tibetans.

From his home in exile, in Dharmsala, India, Tibet's spiritual leader the Dalai Lama appealed for both sides to avoid violence.

Chinese authorities have offered leniency if the demonstrators surrender before Tuesday.
