U.S. Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama is repudiating comments made by the minister of his church, including an assertion that past U.S. policies led to the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks.
In a statement Friday, the Illinois senator denounced any statements made by the Reverend Jeremiah Wright that, in Obama's words, "disparages our great country."
Obama's campaign announced late Friday that Wright was stepping down from its African-American Leadership Committee.
The reverend is the retiring pastor of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ, where Obama has been a member for two decades. In addition to remarks about the 2001 attacks, Wright said voters would embrace Obama over New York Senator Hillary Clinton because he knew what it meant to be a black man living in a society "controlled by rich white people."
