신화통신은 불이 난 랴오닝 성의 광산에서 13명의 광부가 탈출했으나, 광산이 무너져 나머지 광부들이 갇혀 있다고 전했습니다.
Chinese state media are reporting that a mine fire in northeast China has killed 17 miners.
The official Xinhua news agency says the blaze broke out at a mine in Liaoning province when coal spontaneously caught fire. Thirteen workers managed to escape from the fire, which later caused a tunnel to collapse trapping and suffocating miners caught inside.
China's mining industry is the most dangerous in the world, where an average of 13 Chinese workers die every day in mining accidents. Fires, floods and other disasters are frequent occurrences, despite repeated government efforts to improve safety.
Many accidents occur in small, illegal mines, where safety procedures are often ignored. Xinhua says the mine was operating with all its required permits.
