네팔에서 3일, 한국군 장교가 탑승한 유엔 소속 헬리콥터가 추락해 10여명이 사망했습니다.
유엔은 유엔 평화유지활동, PKO를 위해 관계자들을 태우고 네팔 동부 라메치랍 주에 갔다가 카트만두로 돌아오던 이 헬리콥터가 연락이 두절됐다고 확인하고, 추락지점에 수색대를 급파했다고 말했습니다.
한국의 합동참모본부는 이 헬기에 PKO요원으로 파견된 한국군 박형진 중령과 유엔 요원 10여명이 탑승하고 있었다고 밝혔습니다. 박 중령은 지난해 1월, 유엔 안보리 결의에 의해 창설된 유엔 네팔임무단에 관측인 자격으로 파견돼 활동해 온 것으로 알려졌습니다.
이 헬기에 몇명이 탑승했었는지는 밝혀지지 않았습니다. 경찰은 추락지점에서 최소 10여구의 시신을 수습했지만, 폭우 때문에 수색작업이 늦어지고 있습니다. 지역 주민들은 추락지점에서 불길이 솟아오르는 것을 보았다고 말했습니다.

Officials in Nepal say at least 10 people were killed when a United Nations helicopter crashed in the eastern part of the country today (Monday).
The U.N. confirmed it lost contact with a helicopter carrying U.N. staff members, and has dispatched a search party to the site of the crash in Ramechlap province.
It was not clear how many people were on board the flight. Police at the site have recovered at least 10 bodies, but said heavy rain was hampering recovery efforts.
Local residents said they saw flames coming from the aircraft where it crashed.
Reports say the helicopter was returning after an arms-monitoring mission at a camp sheltering former Maoist rebels.
The United Nations has been working in Nepal since 2006 on a peace deal between Nepalese authorities and former Maoist rebels.
