미국의 라이스 국무장관이 3일 팔레스타인 가자 지구 문제를 논의하기 위해 중동 순방 길에 오릅니다.
라이스 장관은 먼저 이집트를 방문해 가자 지구에서의 이스라엘 군 작전을 비롯한 미국과 이집트간의 현안을 논의합니다. 미국 국무부의 톰 케이시 부대변인은 지난 29일 이집트가 가자 지구 상황에서 중요한 역할을 하고 있다고 강조했습니다.
이집트는 가자 지구와 국경을 맞대고 있으며, 가자 지구를 장악하고 있는 팔레스타인 무장단체 하마스와 국경 문제에 대해 회담을 가진 바 있습니다.
라이스 장관은 이집트에 이어 이스라엘과 팔레스타인을 방문해 중동평화 문제에 대해 논의할 예정입니다.
U.S Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is heading to Egypt today (Monday), the first of several stops in the Middle East before she attends a NATO summit in Brussels on Thursday.
Rice will discuss bilateral issues, in addition to the Israeli operations in the Gaza Strip, with Egyptian officials.
On Friday, State Department Spokesman Tom Casey emphasized that Egypt plays an important role in the situation in Gaza.
Egypt shares a border with the Palestinian territory. And the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, has held talks with Egyptian authorities about that border.
Secretary Rice will also travel to Israel and the Palestinian territories to discuss the Middle East peace talks. Her trip was arranged before the announcement by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Sunday that he is suspending the talks.
