이명박 한국 대통령이 한일관계와 관련해 과거의 역사는 뒤로하고 앞으로 나아갈 때라고 말했습니다.
이 대통령은 1일 서울에서 열린 제89주년 3.1절 기념식에서 "한국과 일본은 서로 실용적으로 미래지향적 관계를 형성해야 한다"고 말했습니다.
이 대통령은 또 한국이 더이상 과거의 역사에 얽매여서 미래의 관계를 포기할 수는 없다고 말했습니다.
전임 한국 대통령들과 달리 이 대통령은 일본의 한국 식민통치 시절 범죄행위에 대해 사과를 요구하지 않겠다고 말했습니다.
3.1절은 1919년3월1일 일어난 독립운동을 기념하기 위해 제정됐습니다. 당시 수백만명의 한국인들이 일본의 식민통치 종식을 요구한 독립운동을 벌였습니다. 일본 경찰과 군대는 이들을 잔혹하게 진압했으며, 많은 희생자를 냈습니다.

South Korea's new president, Lee Myung-bak, says the country should put the long history of colonization by Japan behind it and move on.
In a speech today (Saturday), marking the 89th anniversary a Korean uprising against Japanese colonial rule, Mr. Lee said South Korea and Japan should try to build a future-oriented relationship based on pragmatism.
The South Korean leader says the country can no longer afford to give up future relations based on past disputes.
Mr. Lee has said that, unlike his predecessors, he will not demand that Japan apologize for past atrocities during its occupation of the Korean peninsula between 1910 and 1945.
