데이노 페리노 백악관 대변인은 25일, 쿠바에서 한가지 변한 것이 있다면 새로운 지도자가 등장했다는 것 뿐이라고 말했습니다.
페리노 대변인은 쿠바 인들이 자유롭고 번영된 미래를 추구하는 것이 허용될 조짐이 보이지 않고 있다며 백악관은 새 지도부가 국민의 자유에 대한 열망을 실현시켜 주기를 희망한다고 밝혔습니다.
앞서 쿠바 국가평의회는 지난 24일 권좌에서 물러난 형 피델 카스트로의 뒤를 이어 라울 카스트로 국방장관을 새 대통령으로 선출했습니다.

The United States says it will not lift its embargo on Cuba and it expects no changes under the communist island's new leader, Raul Castro.
A White House spokeswoman said (Dana Perino) today (Monday) the only thing that changed in Cuba is that a new leader emerged. She added that while there is no indication Cubans will be allowed to pursue a free and prosperous future, the White House hopes they will be and supports their aspirations.
Separately, the European Commission says it stands ready to continue working with the Cuban government, in cooperation with its E.U. partners, on issues including the environment and climate change.
On Sunday, Cuba's National Assembly named Defense Minister Raul Castro as president, ending nearly 50 years of rule by his brother Fidel Castro.
The 76-year-old Raul Castro, who has been running Cuba on a day-to-day basis since his brother fell ill in July 2006, has pledged to consult with Fidel on all major state decisions.
