미국과 호주는 23일 고위급 회담을 갖고 양국 동맹관계를 재확인했습니다.
미국의 로버트 게이츠 국방장관과 국무부의 존 네그로폰테 부장관은 이날 호주의 수도 캔버라에서 호주의 스티븐 스미스 외무장관과 고위급 회담을 가졌습니다.
호주의 스티븐 스미스 외무장관은 이날 회담을 마치고 이번 회담이 상당히 긍적적이고 생산적이었다고 말했습니다. 이어 스미스 외무장관은 미국과 호주 양국은 이번 회담에서 이라크에 파견한 호주 병력 철수를 포함한 다양한 전략적 현안을 논의했다고 설명했습니다.
또 호주의 피츠기본 국방장관은 회담을 마치고 호주는 미국으로부터 최첨단 F-22 전투기 구매를 희망한다고 말했습니다. F-22는 미국이 개발한 차세대 전투기로 미국 범률은 이 전투기를 외국에 판매하는 것을 금지하고 있습니다. 이에대해 미국의 게이츠 국방장관은 자신은 전투기 판매에 긍적적이지만 전투기를 호주에 판매하려면 미 의회가 해당 법률을 개정해야 할 것이라고 말했습니다.
The United States and Australia reaffirmed their alliance today (Saturday) in the first high-level meeting between the two countries since the installation of the new Kevin Rudd government in December.
U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte met in Canberra with Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith and Defense Minister Joel Fitzgibbon.
Smith told a news conference after the annual talks -- called the AUSMIN consultations -- that discussions had been very positive and very productive.
He said the two sides held wide-ranging discussions on a range of strategic issues including Australia's plan to withdraw a number of troops from Iraq.
Defense Minister Fitzgibbon told reporters he wanted Washington to consider selling its new F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jet to Australia -- technology that is prohibited from being sold to foreign countries.
