France and Britain have formally introduced a resolution to the U.N. Security Council seeking new sanctions against Iran for its disputed nuclear program.
The text proposes a third round of economic and trade sanctions against Iran for its failure to suspend uranium enrichment -- a process that can be used to make nuclear weapons.
Diplomats say the sponsors will aim to get the full Security Council to vote on the resolution next week.
They say the revised draft has the backing of the Council's five permanent members -- France, Britain, the United States, China and Russia -- as well as Germany.
The introduction of the resolution Thursday comes on the eve of an anticipated report from Mohammad ElBaradei, the head of the U.N. nuclear agency, about Iran's past nuclear activities.
