미국은 현재 15만 5,000천명의 미군을 이라크에 파병하고 있습니다. 미 국방부는 금년 7월까지 2만명의 미군을 이라크에서 철수하고, 군 사령관들이 이라크 안보상황을 평가하는 동안 잠시 철수를 중단할 계획입니다.
게이츠 장관은 케빈 러드 신임 호주 총리가 금년 중반까지 575명의 호주군을 철수하기로 결정했지만, 이라크에서 호주군이 계속 군사적인 역할을 수행할 것이라고 말했습니다. 그는 현재 호주군이 이라크 주둔 미군 최고사령관 데이비드 페트라우스 대장과 회담을 열고 있다고 밝혔습니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says he hopes to withdraw more American troops from Iraq by the middle of this year, then pause briefly to assess the security situation.
Gates revealed his plans to reporters today (Friday) while en route to Australia, where he will hold security talks with officials of Australia's new government.
About 155-thousand U.S. troops are currently deployed in Iraq. The Pentagon plans to withdraw 20-thousand of them through mid-July, then pause while military commanders evaluate the security situation.
Gates says Canberra will continue to play a military role in Iraq, despite new Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's decision to pull 575 combat troops by the middle of this year. He says Australian forces are holding talks with Army General David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq.
