A top aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has accused Israel of stalling Middle East peace talks and suggested that Palestinians should unilaterally declare independence.
The aide, Yasser Abed Rabbo, made his comment today (Wednesday). Senior Palestinian negotiators quickly voiced opposition to any unilateral declaration of independence.
Palestinian President Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met Tuesday in Jerusalem and agreed to accelerate talks in an effort to reach a deal by year's end.
The leaders also agreed to meet again in two weeks and negotiators will meet in the interim.
Few details of Tuesday's talks have emerged. But Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said Mr. Abbas raised the issue of Israel's blockade on the Gaza Strip.
