아프리카를 순방중인 조지 부시 미국 대통령은 17일, 탄자니아 수도 다르 에스 살람에서 탄자니아 대통령을 만나 탄자니아의 경제 성장 촉진을 돕기 위한 약 7억 달러 지원 협정에 서명했습니다.
이같은 지원 규모는 바람직한 지배구조와 법치, 자유시장경제 등과 지원을 연계하는 부시 행정부의 밀래니엄 챌린지 코퍼레이션의 지원 중 최대 규모입니다.
부시 대통령은 자카야 키크웨테 탄자니아 대통령과의 공동기자회견에서, 자신의 국제 에이즈 프로그램을
재개하라고 미 의회에 촉구했습니다. 부시 대통령은 앞으로 5년 간 국제 에이즈 프로그램의 규모가 앞서 지난 5년 사용된 150억 달러의 두 배인 3백억 달러로 늘어나기를 기대하고 있습니다.
부시 대통령은 탄자니아에 이어 르완다와 가나, 라이베리아를 방문할 예정입니다.
부시 대통령은 이번 아프리카 순방의 목표는 민주 개혁과 경제 발전을 촉진하고, 말라리아와 에이즈에 대한 공공 보건 운동의 진전을 검토하는 것이라고 말했습니다.

U.S. President George Bush has met with Tanzania's president Jakaya Kikwete and signed a nearly 700 million-dollar grant to help stimulate economic growth in the east African nation.
The grant is the largest from the Bush administration's Millennium Challenge Corporation, which ties assistance to good governance, rule of law and free-market economics.
At a news conference in Dar es Salaam today (Sunday) with President Kikwete, Mr. Bush urged the U.S. Congress to renew his global AIDS program. President Bush wants to double the size of the program, from the 15 billion dollars already spent to 30 billion over the next five years.
President Kikwete praised Mr. Bush for his support in fighting AIDS and malaria in Tanzania.
