North Korea has marked the 66th birthday of leader Kim Jong Il today (Saturday), with a series of celebrations and praises in the official media.
State media called on the country to unite under Mr. Kim to make North Korea stronger. Mr. Kim's birthday is one of the most celebrated holidays in North Korea, along with the birthday of his late father and national founder Kim Il Sung.
Kim Jong Il took over the country after the death of his father in 1994 and assumed a strong cult of personality, despite North Korea's collapsing economy and a famine in the mid-1990s that left hundreds of thousands dead.
He has three sons, but has not named a successor.
