한국 정부당국은 지난 8일 소형 선박 2척을 탄 채 서해 연평도 부근 남측 해안으로 표류해온 북한 어민 22명을 북으로 돌려보냈다고 밝혔습니다.
한국의 연합 뉴스는 익명의 정보 당국 관계자의 말을 인용해. 이들이 관계당국의 조사를 거쳐 같은날 저녁 북송됐다고 전했습니다.
이 관계자는 북한 어민들은 남자 8명, 여자 14명 등으로 이뤄졌으며 , 이들이 북으로 돌아가기를 원해 곧바로 육로를 통해 돌려보냈다고 말했습니다.
고기잡이를 하던 북한 주민들이 남측으로 떠내려오는 사례는 종종 있었지만 이처럼 많은 인원이 한꺼번에 남하한 것은 이례적입니다.
정보 당국은 연합뉴스측에 비록 그들가운데 여성들도 있었지만 자신들은 귀순 의사가 없음을 밝혔다고 전했습니다.
Officials say South Korea repatriated 22 North Koreans after they drifted into southern waters in strong currents last week.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted an unidentified intelligence official today (Sunday) as saying the group was interrogated on Friday of last week.
The official said that since they wanted to return home, the eight men and 14 women were sent back that evening using an overland route.
North Korean fishing boats occasionally cross the disputed sea border in the Yellow Sea but it is rare for such a large number to drift into the South.
Intelligence officials told Yonhap that although the group included women, they said they had no intentions of defecting.
