파키스탄 북서부의 한 종족지역에서 16일 선거 집회 후 자살폭탄 공격이 발생해 적어도 37명이 숨지고 90명 이상이 다쳤습니다.
파키스탄의 하미드 나와즈 칸 내무장관은 자살폭탄범은 이날 아프가니스탄과의 국경 인근에 위치한 파라치나르 마을에서 한 총선 후보의 사무실 밖에 모인 인파를 향해 자신의 차를 돌진시켰다고 말했습니다.
이날 공격은 지난해 말 암살된 베나지르 부토 전 총리가 이끌었던 파키스탄 인민당 지지자들이 선거 집회를 벌인 후 발생했습니다. 이날은 오는 18일 실시될 총선을 앞두고 선거유세를 벌일 수 있는 마지막 날이었습니다. 파키스탄 정부는 치안 유지를 위해 전국적으로 8만명 이상의 군병력을 배치했습니다. (끝)
A suicide attack after an election rally has killed at least 37 people and wounded more than 90 others in Pakistan's restive northwest tribal region.
Pakistan's Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz Khan says a suicide bomber rammed his car into a crowd outside a candidate's office in the town of Parachinar, (in the Kurram tribal region) along the Afghan border. The attack occurred today (Saturday) following an election rally held by supporters of slain former prime minister Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party.
Today is the last day of campaigning ahead of Monday's parliamentary elections, and the attack is the latest in election-related violence.
The government has deployed more than 80-thousand troops across Pakistan to maintain security.
Next week's vote will determine the makeup of Pakistan's National Assembly and provincial assemblies, and could determine the future of President Pervez Musharraf.
