Officials in Tehran say U.S. and Iranian officials will meet in Baghdad Friday for a fourth round of talks on improving Iraq's security situation.
Iran's official news agency, IRNA, quotes Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki as saying the U.S.-Iran meeting will be held at the experts level. The Associated Press quotes an advisor to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as confirming the meeting.
U.S. officials have not confirmed the meeting.
U.S. and Iranian officials met three times in Baghdad last year, breaking a 27-year freeze in diplomatic contacts between the two sides. Two of those meetings involved U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker and his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Kazemi Qomi.
In another development, Iran's Fars news agency says Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will travel to Iraq on March first for a two-day visit. The agency quotes an unnamed source as saying Mr. Ahmadinejad's trip will include stops in the Shi'ite holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.
The planned visit will be the first by an Iranian leader to Iraq in years.
