A new study says nearly one in five Americans will be foreign-born by the year 2050, and immigrants and their children will contribute largely to U.S. population growth in the coming years.
The study, released Monday by the Washington-based Pew Research Center, says the U.S. population will grow to 438 million in 2050 from 296 million in 2005, if current population trends continue.
It says immigrants and their U.S.-born descendants will account for most of the growth, especially from the Latino population, which is expected to make up nearly 30 percent of the population in 2050, compared to 14 percent in 2005.
The study says non-Hispanic whites will become a minority in the United States by 2050, making up 47 percent of the population.
But it says the nation's elderly population will more than double in size from 2005 to 2050.
