로버트 게이츠 미 국방장관은 오는 7월 이라크 주재 미군의 첫 철군이 끝난 뒤 미군 감축을 멈출 필요가 있을지 모른다는 이라크 주재 최고 사령관의 견해를 이해한다고 밝혔습니다.
게이츠 장관은 이 날 바그다드에서 데이비드 페트라우스 이라크 주재 미군 최고사령관과 만난 뒤 이같이 밝혔습니다.
페트라우스 사령관은 앞서 미군의 추가 철군 전에 이라크의 보안 상황 점검을 위해 철군을 멈추는 것이 필요할 것으로 본다고 밝힌 바 있습니다.
게이츠 장관은 앞서 마지막 증파된 여단이 떠난 뒤 한 달에 3천5백명 규모의 미군 철군이 계속되길 바란다고 밝힌 바 있습니다.
게이츠 장관은 최근 폭력 사태의 감소는 이라크 인들이 보다 나은, 안전하고, 번영하는 미래를 가질 기회를 가지게 됐다는 것을 의미한다고 밝혔습니다. 그러나 게이츠 장관은 이라크 현지 상황은 여전히 미약하다고 경고했습니다.
한편, 이라크 경찰은 이 날 바그다드 남부에서 폭발 테러 두 건이 발생해 최소 3명이 사망하고 여러 명이 부상했다고 밝혔습니다.
U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has endorsed the opinion of his top commander in Iraq, saying there may need to be a "pause" in troop reductions once initial pullouts are completed in July.
Gates spoke today (Monday) in Baghdad after a meeting with the U.S. and coalition commander General David Petraeus. General Petraeus said earlier that he believes a pause will be needed to assess the security situation in Iraq before withdrawing additional troops.
Gates had previously said he hoped the drawdown of about 35-hundred U.S. troops a month could continue after the last of the "troop surge" brigades leaves.
Today, Gates said a recent decline in violence means the Iraqi people have an opportunity to forge a better, more secure, and more prosperous future -- but he cautioned that the situation remains fragile.
In southern Baghdad today (Monday) Iraqi police say twin explosions killed at least three people and wounded several others.
