Officials now say at least 55 people died and hundreds were injured when tornadoes ripped through the south-central United States Tuesday and Wednesday.
The powerful storm system killed at least 31 people in Tennessee, 13 in Arkansas, seven in Kentucky and four in Alabama.
Dozens of tornadoes are believed to have touched down in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky and Alabama.
State and federal emergency teams have poured into those areas, and residents are cleaning up after the devastating storms.
President Bush has offered federal support and plans to travel to Tennessee Friday to survey the damage.
The tornadoes injured at least 149 people in the state of Tennessee alone. Rescue crews had been going door-to-door in search of more victims.
