폴란드와 미국은 미사일 방어망(MD) 기지 배치 문제와 관련 원칙적인 합의를 이뤘다고 폴란드 외무장관이 1일 밝혔습니다.
워싱턴을 방문중인 폴란드의 라도슬라브 시코르스키 외무장관은 이날 미국의 콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관을 만난뒤 기자들을 만나 이같이 말했습니다. 시코르스키 외무장관은 미사일 방어망 계획을 둘러싼 최종적인 결정은 폴란드의 도널드 투스크 총리의 미국 방문 중 이뤄질 것이라고 설명했습니다.
콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관은 이날 미국은 폴란드의 안보를 지원하고 있으며 미국은 폴란드의 방공망을 개선하는 것을 지원할 것이라고 말했습니다. 또 폴란드와 미국 외무장관은 한 목소리로 미국이 추진하는 미사일 방어망 계획은 기본적으로 방어용이라며 이는 러시아를 겨냥하는 것이 아니라고 말했습니다.
현재 미국의 부시 행정부는 폴란드에 10여기의 요격용 미사일을 배치하고 싶어합니다. 또 미국은 체코에도 레이더 기지를 설치하기를 희망하고 있습니다. 그러나 러시아는 미국이 추진하는 미사일 방어망 계획이 동부 유럽의 안보를 위태롭게 한다며 이를 반대하고 있습니다.
Poland's foreign minister says he has reached agreement in principle with the United States for the planned deployment of a U.S. missile-defense system in his country.
Radoslaw Sikorski spoke to reporters in Washington Friday following talks with his U.S. counterpart, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. He says he hopes that a final and positive decision will come when (Polish) Prime Minister Donald Tusk visits the United States early in March.
Rice says the U.S. has a real commitment to Poland's security, and it supports an upgrade for Warsaw's air defense system so the country can become a more capable NATO ally.
Both the Polish minister and Secretary Rice stressed that the defensive missile system is not intended to threaten Russia.
