U.S. officials say an al-Qaida commander has reportedly been killed in a missile strike along the Afghan border in northern Pakistan.
Unnamed Pakistani intelligence officials (based in the town of Miran Shah) today (Friday) said they believe Abu Laith al-Libi was killed earlier this week (Monday or Tuesday) when a missile launched from a U.S. military drone targeted an al-Qaida hide-out in the North Waziristan tribal region. At least 12 militants, including several Arabs and Central Asians were killed in the strike near the town of Mir Ali.
Pakistani government officials confirmed the explosion but would not say who was killed or what caused the blast. Military spokesman (Major-General Athar Abbas) told the Voice of America (Deewa Radio) that locals sealed the area and buried the victims soon after the attack.
The U.S. Department of Defense has not commented on the incident.
Libi, a Libyan national, is believed to have plotted a number of attacks against U.S. and coalition forces, including last year's bombing at a U.S. military base in Afghanistan.
Pakistani officials say a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-packed car into a military checkpoint, killing five soldiers and wounding eight others in the country's restive tribal region.
