영국에 본부를 둔 국제 인권단체인 엠네스티 인터내셔널은 버마 군부가 지난 민주화 시위 발생 이후로 더 많은 정치 운동가들을 구속하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
엠네스티 인터내셔널은 체포를 중단하겠다는 버마 군부의 유엔에 대한 약속에도 불구하고 지난해 11월 초 이래 96명의 반체제 인사들이 구속됐다고 말했습니다.
이 단체는 이들이 구속 중 고문을 받고 부당한 대우를 받았다는 보고를 받았다고 밝히고, 지난 11월이래 시위자 15명 이상이 징역형을 선고 받았다고 말했습니다.
이 단체는 또 지난 해 9월 민주화 시위 이후 적어도 7백명 이상이 체포 구금됐으며, 시위 진압 도중 31명 이상이 사망했다고 밝혔습니다.
Amnesty International says Burma's military government has arrested more political activists since its bloody suppression of pro-democracy demonstrations.
The international human rights group says 96 dissidents have been detained since early November, despite assurances the government made to the United Nations that it would halt arrests.
Amnesty says it has received reports that detainees have been tortured and ill-treated. At least 15 protesters and their supporters have been sentenced to prison terms since November.
The group says at least 700 people arrested during and since the September protests remain behind bars.
The U.N. says at least 31 people were killed in the crackdown, which triggered international outrage against the military government.
